A Letter From Someone Who Read My Story

There are some letters you keep because they remind you of who you were.

And then there are letters that arrive after you’ve written your own story—and somehow tell you that your story reached someone in a way you never expected.

A dear friend from an earlier chapter of my life recently read The Life We Chose.

She knew me then.

But she didn’t know what I was carrying.

She didn’t know the things I kept hidden behind a smile, or the battles I was quietly fighting.

And perhaps that’s why her words touched me so deeply.

She wrote:

I didn’t know she saw me that way.

And that’s the strange thing about the stories we carry.

Sometimes, we become so accustomed to surviving them that we don’t realize other people are watching us slowly find our way back.

She didn’t know what was happening to me then.

But she knows now.

And perhaps that’s what writing the story has given me—not another reason to look backward, but a way to see just how far I’ve come.

To the friend who wrote this:

Thank you.

For reading my story.

For seeing me.

And for reminding me that sometimes, people carry pieces of our story with them even when we never knew we had left them there.

Some words arrive at exactly the right time.

I think yours did.
