The First Night I Slept Without Fear

There are nights we remember because something extraordinary happened.

And then there are nights we remember because…

nothing happened at all.

No shouting.

No fear.

No waiting for the next harsh word.

No lying awake wondering what tomorrow might bring.

Just…

sleep.

The day my daughters and I left, I thought my mind would refuse to rest.

After all, I had just walked away from everything familiar.

I didn’t know exactly how we were going to survive.

I didn’t know where the money would come from.

I didn’t know what tomorrow would look like.

I only knew we had left.

When the airplane began taxiing toward the runway, I expected to spend the flight staring out the window, replaying every decision that had brought me there.

Instead…

before the plane even took off…

I fell asleep.

Just like that.

No struggle.

No racing thoughts.

No convincing myself to rest.

It was as though my body had been waiting years for someone to finally tell it,

“You don’t have to stay awake anymore.”

I sometimes wonder if that was the moment I realized how exhausted I truly was.

Not physically.

My soul.

It had been carrying fear for so long that it no longer knew what life felt like without it.

When we arrived at my childhood home, I remember looking around the room that had once been so familiar.

It wasn’t grand.

It wasn’t luxurious.

It was simply…

safe.

That night, I climbed into bed.

And I slept.

Deeply.

Peacefully.

The kind of sleep that children fall into after a long day of playing.

The kind of sleep that doesn’t ask permission before it arrives.

When I opened my eyes the next morning, sunlight was already filling the room.

I had slept later than I usually did.

For a brief moment, I simply lay there.

Quiet.

Still.

Listening.

Not because I was afraid.

Because there was nothing to be afraid of.

That silence felt different.

It wasn’t empty.

It was peaceful.

Looking back now, I don’t think God only rescued me by opening a door.

I think He rescued me by giving my weary soul permission to rest.

Almost like He quietly pulled a blanket over my shoulders and whispered,

“Go ahead.”

“Sleep.”

“I’ll keep watch tonight.”

I don’t remember hearing those words.

But somehow…

I felt them.

The worries didn’t disappear overnight.

There were still bills.

Still uncertainty.

Still difficult conversations waiting for another day.

Life didn’t suddenly become easy.

But peace had finally arrived.

And once you’ve experienced real peace…

you realize how heavy fear had always been.

Sometimes people imagine healing as fireworks.

A dramatic transformation.

A single moment that changes everything.

Sometimes healing is much quieter than that.

Sometimes healing looks like sleeping through the night for the first time in years.

Sometimes faith looks like closing your eyes without fear.

Sometimes the holiest prayer you’ll ever pray isn’t spoken at all.

It’s trusting God enough to fall asleep.

There is a verse I have carried with me ever since:

“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for You alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.” — Psalm 4:8

For many years, I read those words hoping they would become true.

That first night…

they finally did.

And every now and then, when life becomes overwhelming again, I remember that morning.

The sunlight.

The quiet.

The peace that met me before my worries did.

And I smile.

Because now I know…

Rest isn’t something we earn after life becomes perfect.

Sometimes…

it’s one of God’s first gifts when we finally come home.

Thank you for spending a few quiet moments here.

May you leave carrying a little more hope than when you arrived.

With love,
